In short
Overview
Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, spread along a ridge at an average 2,206 m, about 350 km from Delhi and 116 km from Chandigarh. It was the British summer capital, and the Ridge, Christ Church and the Mall still set its character. Leisure Himachal's Shimla Manali, Himachal Darshan and Amritsar tours each spend two nights here.

By road
About 350 km from Delhi via Chandigarh and Solan; overnight Volvo coaches run from Delhi.

Why Shimla?
Shimla is the easiest of Himachal’s hill towns to reach and the most built-up. Its appeal is the old town on the ridge: half-timbered buildings around the Ridge, the yellow Christ Church, and the Mall running along the spine with no cars on it. Kufri, half an hour away, gives the wide Himalayan view the town itself does not.
For most travellers Shimla is a stop rather than a destination — the first night out of the plains, or the last one before them. That is how our tours use it.
When is the best time to visit Shimla?
- March to June — warm days, cool evenings; peak season through May and June.
- July to August — monsoon rain and mist; roads can be slow.
- September to November — clear and settled, the best views of the peaks from Kufri.
- December to February — cold, with a chance of snow from mid-December. Kufri usually sees it first.
How Shimla fits into a Himachal trip
The classic route runs Delhi → Shimla → Manali, or the reverse:
- Shimla Manali Volvo tour — 5 nights, overnight Volvo both ways.
- Shimla, Manali & Chandigarh by car — 6 nights with your own car and driver.
- Complete Himachal Darshan — 9 nights, Shimla to Dalhousie and back through Chandigarh.
The drive from Shimla to Manali, about 240–265 km, takes most of a day through Mandi and past the Pandoh dam on the Beas.

Shimla: questions
How many days are enough for Shimla?
Two nights covers the Ridge and the Mall, Viceregal Lodge, Jakhoo and a half day at Kufri. Most of our tours pair Shimla with Manali, about 240–265 km further north.
Does it snow in Shimla?
Shimla can get snow between mid-December and February, though not every year in town. Kufri and Narkanda, higher up, are more reliable for snow.
Is the toy train worth taking?
The Kalka–Shimla railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line and slower than the road. It is worth it one way if your dates allow; book ahead in summer.
Which Leisure Himachal tours include Shimla?
The Shimla Manali Volvo tour, Complete Himachal Darshan, the Shimla–Manali–Chandigarh car tour, Himachal with Amritsar and Himachal with Vaishno Devi all include Shimla.
