Best time to visit Himachal Pradesh, region by region

The best time to visit Himachal Pradesh is March to June and September to November for most of the state — Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie — with December to February for snow. July and August bring the monsoon and landslides. The high regions are different: Spiti, Lahaul and the Manali–Leh road are best from June to September, when the passes are open.

The short answer

Most of Himachal has two good seasons — spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November) — a snow season (December–February) and a monsoon to plan around (July–August). The high, dry regions beyond the Pir Panjal — Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh — have one season: summer.

Region by region

Region Best Snow Avoid
Shimla & Kufri Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov Late Dec–Feb (Kufri more reliable) Heavy monsoon weeks
Manali & Solang Mar–Jun, Oct–Nov Dec–Mar Jul–Aug landslides
Kullu, Kasol, Manikaran Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov Kasol late Dec–Feb Monsoon on the Parvati road
Dharamshala Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov On the Dhauladhar, Dec–Feb Jul–Aug — very wet
Dalhousie & Khajjiar Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov Late Dec–Feb Peak monsoon
Spiti Jun–Sep Winter — Kinnaur route only Oct–May on the Manali side
Leh-Ladakh by road Jun–Sep — Road shut roughly Nov–May

Season rates

Leisure Himachal’s package prices follow the same calendar: 15 April to 15 July is season on every tour, and the Volvo packages add 20 December to 5 January. Travelling just outside those windows — early April, late September, October — gets you good weather at off-season prices. October is also when the valley holds Kullu Dussehra, and the high passes’ opening and closing dates are in the pass calendar.

Planning a long trip

If you want both the green hills and the high desert in one go, travel in June or September: Shimla and Manali are pleasant and the passes to Spiti or Leh are open. Our Complete Himachal Darshan covers the hill towns; the Manali–Leh jeep safari the high road.

Quick answers

Which is the best month to visit Himachal?

For the main hill towns, May and October are hard to beat — May for warm days with snow still on the peaks, October for the clearest skies and thinner crowds. For Spiti and Ladakh, July to September.

Should I avoid Himachal in the monsoon?

July and August bring heavy rain and landslides that close roads, especially on the Chandigarh–Manali highway. If you go, keep buffer days. Spiti and Ladakh, beyond the main ranges, stay mostly dry.

Where can I see snow in Himachal in December?

Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel side near Manali, Kufri and Narkanda near Shimla, and Dalhousie and Khajjiar in most winters.
