Leisure Himachal's guide puts it plainly — you do not need to be an experienced trekker; the routes run from gentle to very tough. The guide

Trekking guide

Start easy: Triund

From McLeodganj, walk or drive up to the Galu temple above Dharamkot and follow the trail through oak and rhododendron. It is gradual most of the way with a steep zigzag at the end, and it brings you out on a grassy ridge at about 2,850 m facing the wall of the Dhauladhar. Many people camp there for the sunrise. Read the Triund trek guide for distances, the forest fee and camping limits, and the Dharamshala guide.

From Manali

  • Beas Kund — the glacial source of the Beas, up the Solang valley; two or three days.
  • Hampta Pass — the classic crossing at 4,270 m from the green Kullu side to the bare valleys of Lahaul, often finished with a visit to Chandratal. Four to five days, summer only — see the Hampta Pass trek guide.
  • Bhrigu Lake — a high lake above Gulaba with big views of the Pir Panjal.

From Kasol

  • Kheerganga — a walk up the Parvati valley to a meadow with a hot spring at the top. See Kasol and Manikaran.

Before you go

Go up gradually above 3,000 m, carry warm layers even in summer, and avoid steep trails in the monsoon. Fees and permissions vary by trail and by forest division; we tell you what applies when you book.
