What a tandem flight is like

You and a licensed pilot share one glider. After a short briefing you are clipped into a harness in front of the pilot, the wing is laid out on the slope behind you, and on the pilot’s word you run a few steps into the wind. Then the ground falls away. At Bir the flight path crosses the whole Kangra valley — tea gardens, villages and the Dhauladhar behind you — before landing in the fields at Bir.

Bir Billing or Solang?

Bir Billing is the serious site: a big, south-facing take-off at about 2,400 m, reliable autumn thermals and long flights. Plan a night or two in Bir, which is a pleasant Tibetan village in its own right. See the Bir Billing guide.

Solang Valley, 14 km from Manali, is the easy add-on: short tandem hops above the valley floor, with snow on the peaks around you. It fits into a Manali day without changing your plans.

When to fly

At Bir the main season is September to November, with March to May a good second season. The monsoon months are closed. Solang flies in the warmer months when the wind allows. Wherever you fly, keep a spare morning — wind decides, not the timetable.

Adding it to your trip

Paragliding is not included in our package prices. Tell us on WhatsApp which day suits and we will tell you what can be arranged and the current price. Bir fits naturally into the Dharamshala Volvo trip or between Manali and Dharamshala on the Manali & Dharamshala tour.

Paragliding: questions

Where is the best place for paragliding in Himachal?

Bir Billing in Kangra district is the best known — its south-facing take-off at Billing has hosted international competitions. Solang Valley near Manali offers shorter tandem flights closer to the snow.

Do I need training for a tandem flight?

No. On a tandem flight a licensed pilot flies the glider and you are harnessed in front. You only need to run a few steps at take-off when the pilot tells you.

When is paragliding season at Bir Billing?

September to November is the main season, with October usually the best. March to May is also flown. The monsoon, July to mid-September, is closed.

Is paragliding safe?

Fly only with a registered operator and a licensed pilot, check the harness and reserve, follow the operator's weight limits, and accept that flights are cancelled when the wind is wrong.
