Dalhousie and Khajjiar in two days
Two days is enough for Dalhousie and Khajjiar. Day one: Dalhousie's walks around Gandhi Chowk and the Mall, Bakrota Hills and Dainkund peak. Day two: through the Kalatop forest to the meadow and lake at Khajjiar, about 17 km away, and on to Chamba's 10th-century temples, 35 km from Dalhousie. Dalhousie is at 1,970 m in Chamba district.
Day one: Dalhousie
Start at Gandhi Chowk and walk the level roads around the hills — the old station was built on five of them in the 1850s, and the walks are the point. Climb or drive up Bakrota Hills, then go out to Dainkund, the high point nearby, for the view across the ranges and the short walk to the Pholani Devi temple. Evening on the Mall.
Day two: Kalatop, Khajjiar and Chamba
Drive through the Kalatop sanctuary’s deodar and blue pine to Khajjiar — a long green meadow with a small lake and the Khajji Nag temple, ringed by forest. Give it a couple of hours. Continue to Chamba on the Ravi for the Lakshmi Narayan temples and the Chaugan, and drive back to Dalhousie.
When to go
March to June for green meadows; September to November for clear, quiet days; late December to February for snow.
